Diana and Charlotte volunteering on Bike to Work and Wherever Day

Volunteers make the magic happen! We began as an all-volunteer organization and we still rely on volunteers for our events, outreach, and data collection. If you are interested in making a difference in the fun and safety of bicycling in the Philadelphia region, you came to the right place. There are many ways you can get involved in this effort.

Meet Amanpreet, one of the many Bicycle Coalition volunteer all stars:

Amanpreet Kaur

I always wanted to learn to bike and searching through the internet led me to the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia.

They have classes for learning to ride as an adult as well as introduction to urban riding. I actually took the urban riding class and was inspired to “feel the air in my hair” while on my bike; and I surely did when I actually was biking around during my class. A two hour class got me from nothing to on my bike and beyond!

The class introduced me to the BCGP group as well and I met some wonderful people that inspired me to get more involved.

So far, I have been to the Explore the Circuit rides and promoted BCGP on Bike to Work Day and at the Bike Expo. It truly has been a wonderful experience to be involved with BCGP.

Specific Communities

Several of our programs have active online and real-world communities. Getting involved here is a way to meet new people also engaged in these aspects of bicycling.

Women Bike PHL Facebook group | This is the web hub for our Women Bike PHL program, a forum for women, trans, and/or nonbinary bicyclists in Philadelphia to exchange information, plan events, and talk about bicycling.

Biking the Suburbs Facebook group | If you live in one of the counties surrounding Philadelphia (PA or NJ), look here for other engaged bicyclists. We post county-specific news and information here as it happens.

Philadelphia Kidical Mass | The Facebook page for our self-organizing partners who organize family biking events. If you are a Philadelphia parent interested in riding with your children, this is a group for you.

Volunteering by subject area

Here are some examples of ways you can volunteer with the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia:

Learn to Ride  – Each year we offer Adult Learn to Ride classes at Lloyd Hall (the gym behind the Art Museum). We are looking for volunteers to teach, or really to encourage, our newest riders during these sessions. If you discover this is an activity that suits you, you’ll be welcome to assist as many classes as your schedule permits. You’ll find all the dates on the Bicycle Coalition Public Calendar. Each class is typically a 2 hour commitment.

Explore the Circuit Rides –  Our rides are geared towards educating and informing; they are not athletic competitions. Nevertheless, our rides can be 10-20 miles long and the dates are listed on our Public Calendar. Volunteers would provide ride support (helping marshal the group) and overall encouragement. Each ride would involve a 3-4 hour commitment.

Bike to Work & Wherever Day  – Each May (during National Bike Month) the Bicycle Coalition celebrates this day with a handful of energizer stations & other festivities where volunteer help is needed. Join us in signing up new members, talking about cycling, offering refreshments, and cheering riders on. These morning activities typically involve a 2-3 hour commitment (during a week day).

Bicycle Coalition Youth Cycling – This program introduces Philadelphia youth to the sport of cycling while teaching valuable life skills. We host and attend various events where we could use your help (marshaling the route, helping serve lunch, etc.)! Besides the athletic component, we do offer academic support to our youth — if you can help tutor, we’d love to hear from you, too! Please fill out the volunteer signup above if you are interested in getting involved. If you wish to learn more about the program, you can reach out to the Program Manager Taylor Kuyk-White. taylor@bicyclecoalition.org

Bike Counts – Since 2008, we have conducted yearly bike counts at a variety of intersections and bridges around Center City. The data we collect allows us to better understand where and how Philadelphians ride their bicycles. This vital work takes a large volunteer force – each survey point is a commitment of 90 minutes apiece during the morning and/or evening commute.

If these opportunities sound like a good time, fill out this volunteer signup form!
